Tapered roller bearings
With a wide range of designs to choose from, our tapered roller bearings are also customizable to match your specific speed, load, contamination, temperature or vibration conditions.
Our Tapered roller bearings feature a cup and cone assembly. The cup is comprised of the outer ring and the cone assembly consists of inner ring, rollers, and cage. This bearing construction accommodates combined loads and provides low friction during operation. By adjusting one single row tapered roller bearing against a second tapered roller bearing and applying a preload, a rigid bearing application can be achieved.
Our tapered roller bearings are also made to Explorer class. Our team combines our expertise in bearing design, tribology, metallurgy, lubrication and manufacturing. Our tapered roller bearings are typically used in bearing solutions where there is a need to increase performance, reduce friction or increase power density in applications.
Single row tapered roller bearings
SKF single row tapered roller bearings (fig. 1) are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads. The projection lines of the raceways meet at a common point on the bearing axis (apex point A, fig. 2) to provide a true rolling action and therefore low frictional moments during operation. The axial load carrying capacity of tapered roller bearings increases with increasing contact angle α. The size of the contact angle, which is usually between 10° and 30°, is related to the calculation factor e (from the product table): the larger the value of e, the larger the contact angle.
Matched tapered roller bearings
The SKF assortment of matched single row tapered roller bearings (fig. 1) is based on popular sizes of single row tapered roller bearings. Depending on the application requirements, matched tapered roller bearings are available in different designs and variants:
- Matched bearings arranged face-to-face
- Matched bearings arranged back-to-back
- Matched bearings arranged in tandem
- Basic design and SKF Explorer bearings
The matched bearings listed in the product tables constitute the basic SKF assortment. SKF can supply other matched bearings on request.
Double row tapered roller bearings
SKF manufactures double row tapered roller bearings in the TDO (fig. 1) and TDI (fig. 2) designs, in many variants and with different features. Depending on the design, these bearings can accommodate heavy radial loads, axial loads in both directions and have a high degree of stiffness. Double row tapered roller bearings are typically used in gearboxes, hoisting equipment, rolling mills and machines in the mining industry, e.g. tunnelling machines.

Four-row tapered roller bearings
Four-row tapered roller bearings can accommodate combined (radial and axial) loads at low to moderate speeds. They are used almost exclusively in work roll applications such as rolling mills.
SKF Cooper split tapered roller bearings
SKF Cooper split tapered roller bearings have two rows of opposed tapered rollers as well as tapered inner and outer ring raceways. They are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads in both directions and are intended for the locating bearing position of shafts. Their split design makes them beneficial for inaccessible applications where mounting, dismounting and maintenance is a challenge. They are typically mounted in a cartridge that fits into different kinds of housings. While specifically designed for the marine industry, these split tapered roller bearings can also be used in a number of different industries.
